I had high hopes for this book, both for its subject matter and its critical acclaim. A discussion of how expectations shapeand define enjoyment/utility is a discussion for another day, but as it relates here, this book was a let down. At times it read like a dictionary as Horowitz attempts to be exhaustive on the subject of dogs. It doesn't have any flow to it, jumping from subject to subject. I think I could've read the italicized excerpts at the beginning of each chapter and gained most of the enjoyment and information I received from the entire book. Horowitz is clearly well-informed on the subject, but she might have pushed the boundaries of her knowledge too far. At the very least, the fact-based nature of the book did a poor job at conveying her passion for dogs. I'd skip this one
