Health care

Would you really expect anything less from a bunch of politicians? Way too much back-scratching going on.

While the article definitely tries to sensationalize one side of this issue, it still remains that over 4,000 women couldn't get the maternity care they needed in the UK.

To quote Dennis Miller from "Thank You For Smoking", "Eloquent in its brevity." Stossel says little, but conveys much. And he is right on.

Article here. It mystifies me how someone could justify forcing insurance companies to cover people with preexisting illnesses and not charge higher premiums to those who are sick. This is the business model of an insurance company. You pay insurance premiums so that if you were to need a large amount of money for health-related costs, an amount that you could not cover, your insurance would cover it. And the way insurance companies compute your premiums is by leaning on their actuaries to assign a probability of costs to each person. If there's a higher probability of the insurance company having to pay a lot of money, they'll charge you more in premiums to offer you this service. In investments, you are compensated for taking on more risk by receiving higher returns. For insurance companies to cover higher risk people, they must be compensated for it. Force them to do otherwise, and health insurance will be near impossible to come by at reasonable prices.

I am shocked, shocked as well. Kudos Stossel!
